Right Mouthguard for Bruxism

Bruxism refers to the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth. If left unaddressed, this parafunctional habit can lead to significant harm to a person's teeth, gums, and jaw joints. Currently, there is no definitive test to diagnose the condition, though dentists often look for tooth wear as a primary indicator. It is important to note, however, that wear patterns can also stem from abrasion, acid erosion, or normal long-term attrition.

When it comes to management, a variety of treatment options exist, but the fitting of an occlusal appliance is widely regarded as the most effective approach. This treatment typically involves a custom-made guard worn over the teeth. Known by several names—such as occlusal bite guards, bruxism appliances, or bite plates—these devices vary slightly in design. Despite their different appearances, the majority are crafted from rigid acrylic resin and are designed to fit comfortably over the upper arch.

While softer splints are available on the market, many dental professionals prefer to fit hard acrylic guards for practical clinical reasons. Soft guards tend to be more challenging to adjust precisely, which can increase the risk of unwanted tooth movement over time. Furthermore, some evidence suggests that rigid guards may be more efficient at limiting the intensity of bruxism. Nevertheless, there are specific cases where a soft guard might be the more suitable choice for a patient.

Commonly, mouthguards fall into a few categories: those made entirely from a hard material (often called flat bruxism splints), those combining both hard and soft layers, and those constructed solely from soft materials. Additionally, some night guards are produced from thermoplastic material. These particular devices require a unique preparation step, as they must be immersed in hot water to soften before they can be molded to the teeth.
