Hazards of Malocclusion

Most cases of malocclusion develop during childhood growth and development. Once malocclusion occurs, it impedes the normal growth of the upper and lower dental arches or jaws, worsening dental deformities progressively.

For patients with anterior crossbite, the reversed alignment of upper and lower front teeth blocks the forward growth of the maxilla, leading to insufficient maxillary length development. Meanwhile, the mandible loses the restraint from normal overjet and overbite of anterior teeth; the forward developmental force of the maxilla also pushes the mandible further forward. As age increases, the mutual adverse effect between upper and lower jaws aggravates deformity, resulting in developmental deformities including midfacial depression (middle one-third of the face) and mandibular prognathism, forming a characteristic crescent facial profile as malocclusion advances.

Correction Methods for Malocclusion

(1) Impaired Oral Health

Crowded and misaligned teeth are hard to clean thoroughly, triggering gingivitis, periodontitis and high caries risk. Abnormal occlusion of displaced teeth also damages periodontal tissues.

(2) Damaged Function of the Stomatognathic System

Severe malocclusion disrupts normal stomatognathic functions:

Severe mandibular retrognathia and lip incompetence often lead to mouth breathing and compromised respiratory function;

Posterior crossbite impairs masticatory efficiency;

Severe mandibular prognathism causes abnormal swallowing;

Combined severe mandibular prognathism and open bite displace the tongue, altering tongue-to-tooth positioning during swallowing and disrupting normal swallowing mechanics;

Anterior open bite and pronounced mandibular protrusion result in speech articulation defects;

Misaligned teeth and jaws create occlusal interferences, restricting mandibular movements (opening, closing, protrusion, lateral excursion). This harms temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function and may trigger organic TMJ lesions.

(3) Negative Effects on Facial Looks

Malocclusion of any kind will ruin facial appearance to some extent. Common visible issues are lips that cannot fully close with teeth sticking out, protruding upper and lower jaws, overly long or short lower face height, plus other facial shape flaws.

(4) Harm to Whole-Body Health

Malocclusion does not just hurt teeth and jaws — it affects your entire body too. Badly misaligned teeth make chewing much harder, easily causing stomach upset and digestive illnesses. On top of looking unappealing, facial deformities can hold people back socially and professionally, often bringing low confidence and mental pressure.
